Florida: Harvard Dean Chosen to Lead University of Miami
April 15, 2015

Julio Frenk, a former health minister in Mexico and a dean who helped quadruple fund-raising at Harvard, was named Monday as the next president of the University of Miami. The school’s board of trustees unanimously approved his selection. He will succeed Donna Shalala, who had been president of the university since 2001. The former Health and Human Services secretary in the Clinton cabinet, Dr. Shalala will become president of the Clinton Foundation. Dr. Frenk, 61, had been the dean of the faculty at Harvard’s School of Public Health. He introduced comprehensive universal health care to Mexican citizens during his tenure there and is the author of two books for young people about the workings of the body.
