Economics & Physical Education departmentss win big at GCU Sports Day

The departments of economics and physical education of the Government College University (GCU) lifted the trophies in boys and girls categories, respectively at the closing day of the varsity’s 115th annual sports day.
Punjab Education Minister Rana Mashhood was the chief guest at the prize distribution ceremony while Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Khaleequr Rahman was also present. The closing was marked by events, including girls chati race, cricket ball throw, pillow fight, staff children race, wheelbarrow race, musical chair and old Ravians handicap race.
According to a press release, the minister and vice chancellor also took part in tug-of-war against the Old Ravians as a message to promote the culture of sports among students and faculty members.
In his address, Rana Mashhood said GCU had produced not only scientists, bureaucrats, politicians, but also a lot of world class athletes and all national teams always included representatives from the university.
Prof Rahman, in his address, congratulated the winning students and said sports had a profound effect on physical fitness and mental health of students, which ultimately enhanced their capabilities and efficiency besides teaching tolerance and creating an environment of competition.
He said promotion of sports ultimately curbed the inclination of youth towards negative activities and deterred them from getting influenced by retrogressive forces.
Noreen Akhtar won the chatti race while Musarrat Abbas musical chairs. Gohar Ali won the obstacle race. Islam Khan stood first in sack race, Muhammad Adnan and Baqir wheelborrow race, Rizwana from Physical Education Department 60metre girls race and cricket ball throw competition, Mohsin, Tariq and Waseem fourlegged race and Abdullah Yousaf the Old Ravians race.
