Why choosing a career is important at school level?
Unless you are Newton, chances are very rare that your career-to-be will drop upon you like the apple. A very few people have that kind of sudden realization, that their whole life they wanted to become something else but spent their lives in the wrong career.
Commonly, it’s because that’s is not a pre-planned or thought through process for them. They believe what they are told, like: ‘son! you can be an excellent doctor.’ or ‘my dear! you have hands of an artist, don’t ruin them otherwise’. They just follow the path that is brought to them. Some make their peace with it, while some go through a turning point in their lives.
For instance, the famous Hollywood actor, Harrison Ford, was a happy carpenter before he switched to acting. And Walt Disney, without whom we would never have had so much of cartoon network, was a regular newspaper editor, and was only until he was fired that he found his passion elsewhere. A famous international chef, Julia Child, quit working as a government spy at age 36 because she realized that she loved baking.
Its never too late to find your passion. But it’s a hundred times better to pursue it at the right time, to have more years to come enjoy doing what you love. Deciding a career line at school level, gives an edge, i-e, you have ample time to be good at it, to experience it in the field, to study about it, and to be the best at it. It helps you decide the journey you’ll undertake pursuing it, and be prepared, as it’s always better to know what you are jumping into, rather than going in blind folded.
When you know what you are jumping into, you can consider all its pros and cons:
- How can I best prepare for it and how much help would I need?
- Can I afford it? If not, how many programs for scholarships are there that I can look for?
- How about I ask Uncle X and Person Y how they pursued it? After all they are in the same profession, they can guide me.
- Field experience will definitely help me know more about it. I should look for beginners internship programs.
- Should I look for short courses abroad? It’ll give me more experience.
- What colleges offer the best programs? I should check their reviews.
- And last but not the least, what can be the possible job opportunities when I complete my education? And how should I keep my backups? Should I consider a small scale business? And what qualities do the best companies look for that I aim to join and how will I excel at them.
Make a prepared decision while you are at it!
Happy Career-hunting!
