“Sadequain the Great Calligrapher”
Internationally known famous painter, calligrapher and poet Sadequian was born in June 1930 at Amroha (India). He started his art in early childhood by making pictures on his school books and note books with the pencil. He graduated from Agra University in 1948. He sometimes served as drawing master in different schools of Agra. He migrated to Pakistan in 1956 and here he served as assistant programmer in Radio Pakistan, but his God gifted qualities brought fruit in the art of painting and he soon became famous for his individual style of painting and calligraphy. He got world reputation by making murals.
His first exhibition was held in 1965 in Karachi and his first mural was painted on the wall of the Karachi Airport. Then in 1961, he painted a mural on the wall of the library of the State Bank of Pakistan Karachi which was named “The Treasure of Time”. In this mural, he painted beautifully the scientific and literary progress from Socrates to Einstein. But his master piece is the mural at “Mangla Power Station”
He started his calligraphy in 1970 and painted the Quranic Verses in his unique and individual style. His best work is the calligraphy of “Surah-e-Rehman“, he painted “Surah Yaseen“ on a 260 feet long panel in 1972. He also painted the roof of “Lahore Museum” in his unique and attractive style.
Sadequain got many prizes and titles in different national and international exhibitions. His painting exhibitions were held worldwide.
He was also a great poet. In 1970 “Rubayiat-e-Sadequain” was published. The government of Pakistan also awarded Sadequain with “Tamgha-e-Imtiaz” and in 1962 with “Tamgha-e-Hussan-e-Karkardegi” and in 1980 with “Sitara-e-Imtiaz”
In 1986, he started to decorate Jinnah Hall with his paintings. It was his last master piece which could not be completed as he died on 10th February, 1987.
