No Pass/No Play Rule

Relationship of Extracurricular Activities with Academic Performance:

Many studies have shown the positive relationship between extracurricular activities and academic performance. It has been established that kids who take active part in extracurricular activities tend to perform better than students who avoid such activities. The National Centre for Educational Statistics have shown the research that students who have productive after school activities tend to have a 15% higher attendance rate in school. Likewise, many studies have shown the importance of how extracurricular activities help students perform better.

No Pass/No Play is basically a Texan public education policy that states that the students must get good grades to participate in extracurricular activities. This rule stands good for some systems as it is a good motivator for kids but the same approach could not be really applied to teenagers.

How would you like if your school started applying this concept of pass and play? Obviously, some of you are going to be totally against it, some would say it’s a good approach as it would keep you guys motivated to work hard, and some of you would just not care. This is the problem that lies with this system, it would not be a good motivator, in fact, and it would not motivate you guys at all to get good grades. But what if this very same condition was applied to you in school and after school? This would surely teach you a few lessons. Like, academics comes first, if you fail you would have to face the consequences and success has it perks.

But the good news is that this approach has been applied to many schools in the history and it really works for a lot of you. When you know you’d be punished for a mischief, you’d still do it but you’d also make amends to cover your tracks. The same lies with academic performance and extracurricular activities. You may avoid studying for a while but when you know you’d not be allowed to play or join your band or go to the library, you’d know you have to prioritize your goals and start studying.

The negative aspect to this approach is that it is a hard approach to deal with kids and is denied by many schooling systems around the globe. Such systems believe that you kids have to be positively motivated to do well rather than to be reminded of the punishments.
