Developing self-discipline

The best definition of self discipline is,“The ability to do what you know you should do, whether you feel like it or not.” Self discipline means that when you know that you have something to do and you get up and do it, rather than thinking excuses to avoid it.

Often this will mean having to overcome natural urge to do what is fun, easy and quick and being able to do things which are difficult, hard and necessary instead. We know that things that bring long lasting success and happiness often require many hours of hard work, self discipline means to ignore the meaningless distractions that are around you and keep you focused on achieving goals.

Self discipline can be developed through training the mind, following positive habits of thought, action and speech in improving yourself to reach required goals.

How to develop self discipline:

  • Start by scheduling small tasks, not more than 15 minutes.
  • Divide tasks throughout the day.
  • Start performing that task at the exact time that has been assigned by you.
  • Stick to the schedule for at least 2 months. This will help you straighten out your priorities. And by focusing on starting the task you can avoid procrastination as well.
  • Keep a track of your progress; this will help you recognizing that how much time the task takes.
  • Instead of using all the energy and devoting a lot of hours in one day and none on the other, allocate specific time for each task equally.
  • Start self discipline by managing your time routine first and staying firm to it.
  • When you start controlling tasks you will start building self discipline, you will be managing time that will also build self-confidence.
  • Review feedback on your progress, keep a record book to get clear picture of activities you have performed and how can you do better next time.
  • Daily scheduling is very important, prioritize your work, and know what is important and what can be done later.
  • Do not be disappointed if you couldn’t accomplish a task within the desired time.
  • If you feel down at a certain point, know that it is natural. Take a break, refresh yourself and then proceed according to the schedule.
  • And remember; if you break the routine, start over!
