University of Gujrat
An Overview
Realizing the need in the Export triangle (Gujrat, Gujranwala and Sialkot) from where thousands of students travel all over Pakistan because of the lack of a comprehensive University in the region, University of Gujrat, popularly known as UOG, was established in the year 2004 by the Punjab Government and was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of the time, Chaudhry Pervez Elahi.
The main campus of the university is named Hafiz Hayat after the saint Mohammad Hafiz Hayat, who donated the land to the authorities of his time (Mughal Era) for educational endeavors. The university has been burgeoning since is inception under the inspirational leadership of Dr. Mohammad Nizammudin who received a Sitara-e-Imtiaz in March 2014 for his sterling contributions to the field of education in Pakistan.
University of Gujrat currently comprises of three Campuses namely,
- University of Gujrat, Hafiz Hayat Campus, Gujrat.
- University of Gujrat, Sialkot Campus
- University of Gujrat, Lahore Campus
Apart from these three campuses, University of Gujrat encompasses four constituent colleges, one Medical College and a Law College, all situated within the District Gujrat. These include 27 departments and about 10 faculties which have been imparting state of the art education to the students.
The main campus, Hafiz Hayat of University of Gujrat, even though still gradually undergoing construction, is worth visiting. The campus was intricately designed by the Chief Architect of Punjab, Zahra Ashraf, and is based on the theme of ‘Ships of Knowledge’ whereby 7 tall and mighty buildings stand in unison portraying the height of educational excellence. These 7 ships have been joined together with bridges in between fostering convenience and representing communication between the different departments. The campus design has been mentioned in different architectural magazines and papers such as Archi Times. Justice Mughal e.g. endorsed the building in his Research Paper published in the journal, Social Science Research Network.
Faculty and students both at UOG are actively encouraged to participate in their field related research and are given the opportunity to attend and present their papers in various international and national conferences. ‘Pakistan Journal of Social Issues’ started in 2009 is the name of the Annual Research Journal of University of Gujrat whose editor in Chief is Dr. Mohammad Nizam ud Din. The paper has stringent reviewing guidelines and accepts papers in varying fields of Social Sciences.
Several societies and clubs pertaining to the interests of students and providing worthwhile experiences to them exist at UOG, hence fostering a learning environment.
