Academic / Learning Skills Development

Learning is a continuous process which encompasses the modification and reinforcement of existing and acquisition of new knowledge, skills, expertise and behaviors. Academic/Learning skills are the skills that distinguish good learners from the poor ones and are comprised of the four C’s namely;

  • Critical Thinking
  • Creative Thinking
  • Communicating
  • Collaborating

The 4 C’s are basically generic skills that aid in all forms of learning. Critical Thinking is the ability to conduct an objective and careful analysis of the subject under consideration. The left part of the brain is responsible for carrying out the Critical Thinking process of a person. It basically includes analyzing, examining, arguing and classifying items and things logically.

The second C is that of Creative Thinking which is governed by our Right Brain. It involves thinking about things from a different perspective and discovery of new ideas and possibilities. It is mostly done via lateral thinking or brain storming.

The process of conveying a thought from the mind of one person to another and receiving them back, is what the third C, Communication, is all about. Being an expert in conveying one’s thoughts and engaging others in a meaningful conversation is a skill that can be acquired.

The 4th C, Collaboration, entails working with others in a collective manner to attain a certain goal that is common for all involved. It requires the allocation of resources, division of responsibilities, brainstorming and decision making along with setting goals, managing conflicts and team building.

Sometimes children are born with these skills, but it is possible to learn these and apply them in the academics.  If children are taught these particular learning skills, they will be able to apply the knowledge and skills imparted to them at school in a better way, making them more confident in their skills and talents. As a result, they will perform better in school and their test scores and level of intelligence enhances.
