The Rude Student

February 10, 2015

The biggest mistake teacher usually do while dealing with student behavior is to take disrespectful behavior personally. A teacher must never take anything personally because when you do two things might occur:
– You will have desire to get even, to show student who is the boss of the class or
– You will be inclined to scold, lecture or react with taunt or sarcasm.

Which will cause more harm, it will make student resent the teacher more, resulting in more of the same unwanted behavior.

How to deal with Difficult / Rude students:

– Stay as calm as possible
– Stay positive and keep voice tone as normal as you can, think for an appropriate response, it might take few minutes to respond but keep yourself composed.
– Always make sure that students know that it’s only their behavior that is disliked and not them.
– Provide a chance to speak why he is being rude, before coming up to conclusions.
– Never ridicule or taunt them back, word hurt especially of teachers
– Always avoid win – lose conflicts.
– Never take any rude comment personally
– Tell students to accept responsibility of their misbehavior
– Always be an attentive listener
– Treat all children equally, respectfully and politely
– Try to remain courteous in the face of hostility or anger.
– Model the behavior you expect from your students.
– Specifically describe misbehavior and help students understand the consequences of misbehavior.
– Be aware of cultural differences. Sometimes children cannot communicate with words, and they start staring which might seems rude
– Discourage cliques and other antisocial behavior.
– Teach students personal and social skills
– Teach students academic survival skills
– Avoid labeling students as “good” or “bad.” It damages children moral
– Focus on recognizing and rewarding acceptable behavior.
– Ignore or minimize minor problems instead of disrupting the class.
– Where reprimands are necessary, state them quickly and without disrupting the class
– When it’s necessary to speak to a student about his or her behavior, try to speak in private
