Social Work and Volunteering
Social work includes nonprofit functions of a society including voluntary acts that aim to alleviate, control or contribute to solutions of poverty, distress and other recognized social problems.
These activities usually enable families, individuals or communities to cope with their social problems in the changing society. It plays an effective role in development and mobilization of human and material resources of a country. They include activities related with education, housing and medical etc. that aim to facilitate and support the people depriving from these basic facilities and help them stand on their own feet and become fully functional members of the society.
In Pakistan, other than poverty, people have to work for education. Social workers and volunteers should direct their efforts in improving the education standard of our country. There are many ways through which people can do this. Social workers can work with parents, teachers and students. They can engage them in different educational activities like workshops, seminars etc. to reach out solutions for the problems hindering people to educate their children.
One important way is to volunteer as an educationist. Government is giving subsidies on education but the quality of education is not good. Young college students can provide free tuition to poor children and help them to raise their standards. Similarly well establish people can join social organizations for the development of small trust schools. Even people can do so within a small community.
Families especially parents should have this approach so that they can teach their children the importance of social work and encourage them to take part in such activities. They are the role models for their children so they should set the example by participating by themselves. Schools can also promote this culture by arranging such activities on an official basis.
