Certain Beliefs and Superstitions

Pakistan has strong cultural and religious roots. People like to follow and abide by the rules set by the societies. Following them are considered to be essential for acceptance as well as attaining a desirable image in the society. With all these traditions and customs come certain beliefs and superstitions. People use to blindly follow these beliefs that have reportedly no scientific or religious background. These beliefs are carried down through generations after generations and are not even questioned.

These beliefs and superstition could be a big problem if they are related to education. Almost 70% of Pakistani families are not in favor of women higher education. There is a general misconception that that more education will spoil the girls and they will become independent which is not good for their marital lives. Also people prefer marrying girls over getting them education, as they believe that they once the “marrying age” of a girl passes, no one will marry her.

The greatest wrong belief, which is common in remote areas of KPK, is that modern education is “haram” (sinful) and they don’t let even their children, especially girls, go to primary schools. Parents should broaden up their minds and think logically that which belief is right and which is harming the life of their children. They should be courageous to accept what is right for them.
