Time for a Change in our Teaching Methods
Most schools in our country focus on teaching methods that result in obtaining higher grades instead of imparting education that lasts. Many of these students, though, toppers in their subjects actually know very little about them. They lack the ability to think and rationalize. They have the common fear of public speaking and have little to no imagination.
Unfortunately, these are the students who will be leading the country in the future.
The need is to change the teaching methods at the primary level.
- Experienced teachers from diverse backgrounds should be given the responsibility to teach children as it is in their early age when they learn the most.
- Schools, instead of engaging students in a competition for grades against one another, should help them in the development of analytical skills and involve them in extracurricular activities. Students should be capable enough to adapt to different situations. They should be able to speak in public and should possess enough knowledge to engage in a discussion on any topic. This can be achieved by creating a learning environment and arranging brainstorming sessions for students.
- Teachers and parents both, when taking children on trips to different places, should discuss the historical value and the geographical importance of the place and take the opinion of children on the subject.
- Technology is a tool that can be used to enhance their knowledge on subjects by usage of visual aids and interactive videos as children learn more in this way.
- Most importantly, never refuse to answer a question asked by a child. It is a part of their learning process and if children are repeatedly ignored in this manner, they will stop asking questions that might put a halt to their critical thinking.
By making a few small changes, schools can play an important part in shaping a bright future for our children.
