M. Phil Biotechnology-GCU Lahore
Course name: M. Phil Biotechnology
Course Overview: The 21st century is envisioned as an era of Biotechnology and Applied Microbiology. Remarkable achievements have been made in the field of science, in general and life sciences in particular, during recent decades. The impact of these developments on improving the quality of life is obvious. Consumption of Biotech products including conventional biotechnology and recombinant DNA products has exceeded Rs. 9.2 billion in 2006 and reached more than Rs. 17.68 billion in 2009. The main contributors are the fermentation-based products e.g. Vaccines, Biopolymers, Antibiotics, Alcohol, Organic Acids, Enzymes, Amino Acids, Baker’s yeast, etc. In near future, fermentation based products and services would remain important contributors to biotech product scenario.
Realizing the immense economic potential, Institute of Industrial Biotechnology (IIB) was set up in 2005 at GC University Lahore under a grant of Rs. 48.087 Millions from Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan. IIB is a vibrant and ambitious institute which has gained a good repute in the University and the society due to its strong commitment to excellence both in research and teaching during the last five years.
The aim of IIB is to develop indigenous experts in Microbiology and Biotechnology. This will increase employment opportunities for qualified students both in industrial research and development markets. The manpower will be highly instrumental in developing in-house technologies for the production of various industrial products at National and International level. The Institute has adopted an integrated approach embracing the view that tomorrow’s breakthroughs are likely to occur at the interface of traditional and advanced biological subdivisions. The aim is well served by the amalgamation of all the related disciplines of Microbiology and Biotechnology. The learning process at IIB comprises of a combination of lectures (theory & practical), seminars / presentations, research projects, internships in various industries, industrial study tours, self-directed readings and independent studies.
