BS (Hons.) Environmental Sciences – UVAS – Lahore
Course Name: BS (Hons.) Environmental Sciences
Overview:
“Environment Friendly” is not a politicized slogan now-a-days rather is a need of the world. Most of the changes occurring on earth at the beginning of the 21st century are unprecedented in their rates and scope. Now there is a growing concern that the environment issue are not neither an ecological problems, nor economic, nor social rather in a combination of all three. People who are in the economic or industrial race and neglecting the harmful impact. On the other hand, the factions of public community started realizing the importance of environment and urged the government to impose strict legislation to save the environment.
The provision of clean air and water, ensuring the security of adequate food supplies and distribution, the development of renewable source of energy , the maintenance of global biodiversity and the prevention of diseases of human and animals are just some of the many priorities facing us as the world’s population continues to grow and aspire to higher standards of living .These changes like biodiversity , atmospheric composition, use of agricultural land for other purposes have important effects on the global environment and subsequently posing challenges to the scientists and the policy makers.
Pakistan is inherited with a number of environment–oriented problems like soil erosion, indiscriminate use of pesticide ,deforestation, desertification, urban pollution ,water-logging and salinity ,water Pollution , etc. another equally important problems is the shortage of food. This shortage can be minimized by increasing the production of livestock poses another threat to the environment in terms of non-carbon dioxide greenhouse gases, especially methane and ammonia that are even 20 times more dangerous than carbon dioxide .Generally, Livestock waste is not treated properly and is dumped into pits or poured directly in rivers or canal systems. if the manure is thrown open in the field, the excreta emit many noxious gases that are harmful to the environment .
To prevent continued environment degradation and the decline of human society, a strong interaction between life and the environment is essential .This is achieved through an integrated, holistic approach encompassing education and research activities. Therefore, the Centre for Environment Sciences, Policy and Management (CESPaM) integrates the biological, physical, and social sciences to provide basic and advanced education in these fields. The CESPaM is also committed to develop critical analytical skills and ability to conduct highest quality research ranging from molecular to global scales and within interlinked human social systems. The CESPaM also aims to advice the government /non-government organizations on environmental policy for sustainable future.
