BS Architecture – LCWU – Lahore
Course Name: BS Architecture
Overview:
The department offers degree programs in the following two disciplines.
Architecture
City & Regional Planning
Architecture:
The rapid growth of the development process at the national level has resulted in a serious demand for appropriately qualified and trained Architects in the country. The demand for recognized professional architects is on the rise, whereas few institutes/universities offer a degree recognized by the Higher Education Commission accredited by the Pakistan Council of architects and Town planners. In view of this, the Department of Architecture was established in the university during the last academic session.
The Lahore College for Women University has a long history of imparting quality education to the women folk of the country. Since the inception of the university a large number of new disciplines have been introduced. As a result, there has been a phenomenal increase in student enrollment. The university has introduced a five year degree program in Architecture leading to a professional degree of B.Arch., which in due course of time will be accredited by the Pakistan Council of Architects and Planners.
The program of the department emphasizes a studio based design skill acquisition process where an individual is working towards her own goal through a problem solving situation, while constantly exposed to a group (also involved in a similar activity) in order share and take advantage of collective “give and take” with a through grinding in theory(science, engineering and humanities).
The university is in process of establishing the most modern, state of the art laborites for various subjects. With the establishment of these state of the art labs, the department at the university will serve as a center of excellence in the country which will focus on studying the past, present and future trends in the development of built environment. The Department shall, thus shoulder the responsibility of preserving our social and cultural values and heritage and providing technical expertise to keep up with the demands of the changing times.
The Architectural curriculums at the university consist of 184 credit hours and require a student to take an average of 17-18 credit hours per semester to complete the requirements of the course in five years (ten semesters as against the minimum requirement of 151 credit hours by the higher Education Commission.
City & Regional Planning:
City and Regional Planning (CRP) Department is first department of its kind in a Women University in Pakistan with broader objective of mainstreaming gender in development. The establishment of the CRP Department at LCWU was recommended by the National Curriculum Review Committee (NCRC) on City and Regional Planning in its meetings held at Higher Education Commission (HEC), Regional Office, and Karachi. The recommendation to establish CRP department at LCWU was endorsed by the representatives of Pakistan Council of Architects and Town Planners (PCATP) in NCRC-CRP.
CRP is a collaborative initiative of International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISoCaRP), the Netherlands, which is a strong advocate of strengthening the technical capacities of women city planners in developing countries to meet the challenges faced by urban agglomerations and designing of socially inclusive low carbon cities in hyper dynamic perspective.
CRP Department at LCWU considers women’s role in development as envisioned in Global Agenda 21 which was core work product from the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992 which was reaffirmed in Rio +20 (2012) by the United National Conference on Sustainable Development in the outcome document, “The Future We Want”.
The department aims to provide qualified city and regional planners having expertise in remote sensing/ GIS, city planning, rural development, disaster management, estate management, hazard mapping, linking urban poverty with water and sanitation indices, policy formulation and designing of socially inclusive cities for physically challenged, visually impaired and elderly citizens for their barrier free mobility.
It is also under consideration that part of the program/internship will be conducted in some international partner institutions in Japan, European Union and UK etc. with the collaboration of International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISoCaRP), Netherlands, with full / partial scholarships. The graduates of our department will be highly skilled city and regional planners with expertise to design productive cities meeting the challenge of youth employment by linking economic policies including infrastructure investment and job creation for creative cities.
