
Student Journalism
In general, journalism is the practice of reporting events and broad casting them to mass audience such as newspaper, books, TV, social media etc. This field includes the process of writing , editing, designing and photography. Although it’s a mature field and require a lot of skills and experience, but these skills can be developed as early as in school age. This can be done by encouraging your children to take part in school journalism.
Now days all the good schools have their magazines, newsletters, manuals and other publication. They are published to report the school events, activities and achievements. With adult supervision, students also work on these activities and learn certain journalism skills.
HOW YOUR CHILDREN CAN BE A PART OF SCHOOL JOURNALISM?
There are many ways your children can be a part of school journalism. Some of the fields are given below.
Being a creative writer.
Your child can write creative and interesting stories for school magazine. These stories can include events from their own life, imaginative stories or informative articles. This will help them to develop better comprehensive skills and help them to improve their written expression. Also it gives confidence to the children that they can create something else than their academics.
Poem writing.
You can encourage your child to write poems for school magazines. It is a unique talent and also helps students in increasing their vocabulary and learning more rhyming words. It is also very beneficial to improve creativity in children.
Reporting events.
If your child is confident and active then he/she could report different events happening in his/her school. It can involve reporting events such as sports day, prize distribution, exhibitions, melad or any other activity happening in the school. They can report and write different aspects of an event and make an interesting article on them.
Working as an editor.
Students with good comprehensive skills and reading habits can work as an editor for school magazine or newsletters. They can check and edit different articles and reports and add elements of creativity and interest in them.
Working as a designer.
If your child is good in arts then he can create and design magazine covers or work as a creative designer although it would be only at a beginners level but gaining confidence at this stage helps them a lot in their practical life.
As a parent, you should encourage your child to participate in such activities and give him the confidence that he can do something out of the class routine.
