Intellectual disability (previously called mental retardation) is a significant deficit in the intellectual functioning of a child, present from birth or early childhood, that cause limitations in the ability of a person to conduct normal activities of daily living. It is a neuro-developmental disorder characterized by sub average intellectual and adaptive functioning and a child having IQ score below 70. Other common symptoms include lack of social functioning and speech. Some families cannot provide care at home, especially for children with profound condition. Social workers can organize services to assist the family. Help can be provided by housekeepers, child caregivers, day care centers, and respite care facilities.
