Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
The term “spectrum” refers to the wide range of symptoms, level of impairment and skills or disability that children with ASD can have. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by:
- deficits in social communication and social interaction across multiple contexts;
- Restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities;
- Symptoms must persist from early developmental period
- Significant impairment in social, occupational functioning.
There’s no proven cure for autism spectrum disorder. Treating ASD early, using school-based programs, and getting proper medical care can help reduce ASD symptoms and help your child’s ability to grow and learn new skills.
Work with your child’s school and start by speaking with your child’s teacher or the school’s student support team to begin an evaluation. A team of professionals should conduct the evaluation using a variety of measures and tools. The evaluation will look at all areas related to your child’s needs and abilities
